Our associations and feelings towards anything in life determine how we react to it. Our feelings about a certain person will determine how we interact with them; our associations towards smoking determines weather we smoke or not and the same can be said for anything we do or don't do. The complexity of life itself has lead all of us to at some point in our lives establish negative or destructive patterns of behaviour. Consciously no one would wilfully indulge in any "negative" or destructive behaviour. The challenge is that the way in which our minds and emotions work we "learn" to establish false associations and by repetition these associations become our "nature" or our instinctive and normal reaction or behaviour. People who drink a lot and love partying don't do it in order to kill themselves; they do it because of the way it makes them feel.

Everything we do in life we do with a positive intent. This positive intent comes down to one of two things. We either do something because we think (or associate to it) that at some level we will gain pleasure from doing it, or we think that at some level it will be painful, so we avoid it. Consequently these two twin forces of pain and pleasure form the basis of everything we do or fail to do. All our behaviour can ultimately be traced back to these two forces.

Introduction to neuro-associative conditioning

If there is one thing Tony Robbins is famous for the world over, then it is his ability to help people create instant and lasting change. No matter what the challenge. Not only that, but he also has the ability to empower people to help themselves to make these changes. This ability is not a God given talent. It is the result of years of studying, incredible hard work and experience in a multitude of fields with some very diverse people. One of the technologies for change that influenced Tony Robbins at the start of his career was NLP.

Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP was pioneered by John Grinder and Richard Bandler  and to a young Tony Robins seeking new ways of creating instant change NLP was like striking gold. Tony Robbins quickly mastered the principles of neuro-linguistic programming and started applying these principles by helping people create remarkable changes in their lives in an instant. In his first book(bestseller) Unlimited Power (written when he was still in his early twenties) most of Tony Robbins' ideas are firmly based in techniques of NLP and other neuro sciences. In his continuous pursuit of creating instant and lasting change, Tony Robbins soon started making some key adjustments to NLP to create his own technology which he calls Neuro-Associative Conditioning™ or NAC™ for short.

Although NAC™ still contain a lot of the essential components of NLP, it focuses on two critical distinctions. Firstly neuro-linguistic programming focuses primarily on linguistics or "language" and more particularly the connection between our nervous system (neuro) and how the use of words, body language and habits reflect our mental reality and consequently our behaviour. NLP is a study in how language patterns influence our reality and how changing these neurological pathways between language patterns and behaviour can be "reprogrammed."

Neuro-Associative Conditioning™ instead of focussing on "linguistics" focuses on the root cause of all our actions and behaviours, our associations, and more particularly the associations in our minds, bodies and emotions to the driving force in all our behaviours. This driving force is the two twin pillars of pain and pleasure and the associations of pain and pleasure in our nervous systems to our actions and behaviours.

Secondly, NLP implies that there is some form of "programming" involved. To a certain extent this is true but after working with thousand of people Tony Robbins started making a critical distinction that lead to his development of NAC. By programming someone to make a change you actually take away one of the most critical ingredients for change: the person changing. See, although someone can help you initiate a change, in the end you are the source and agent for change. You and only you can create the change. Technologies and strategies can only assist you to do it quicker or more effectively.

By changing the focus from programming to conditioning, Tony Robbins established NAC™ as a science for creating instant and lasting change through a process of teaching people to condition (not just programming) themselves for the desired results. Conditioning is not just a one-off process, but once we initiate a change we need to reinforce it immediately and continue to condition our nervous system for the desired results until it becomes our automatic response.

Neuro associative conditioning is Tony Robbins' most well known and most widely acclaimed technology mainly because of it's effectiveness. You would find this technology in some form or another on all of his audio programs, books and seminars.

get the edge 01. Get The Edge - the neauro associative conditioning is well "worked into" the program and integrated with a whole range of Tony Robbins' latest strategies.

personal power 01. Personal Power II, The Driving Force – A very thorough explaination and a very effective step-by-step process which the author guides you through.

personal power 01. Awaken The Giant Within - This mammoth bestseller will give you a very clear explaination of neuro associative conditioning and is also very usefull as further reading for programs like Get The Edge and Personal Power II.

Programs like Lessons in Mastery do refer to and discuss the process, but from experience I find the above mentioned programs to be the best.
